Age of Memethology: 30 Memes for Nostalgic Strategy Gamers Who Still Play Like it's 2002

The games that wololo-ed me into a strategy nerd in childhood are such prime meme material in adulthood.

I remember a time when having a family computer at home was a luxury. My parents didn't purchase one until I was 10, and even then, I didn't know what games I specifically liked to ask my parents for as birthday gifts. I barely knew Jazz Jackrabbit 2, Icy Tower, and Captain Claw, which were installed pirately on some computers in the school's "computer room". 

But in 5th grade I moved schools. And in my new class, I made a new friend. This new friend invited me over to play some games on her computer, and I instantly said, "Yes, for sure. And then… she put on Age of Mythology. I can't even begin to describe how hard I fell for this game. It was an instant crush. The mythical creatures, the waves on the shore, the humble beginnings. And, of course, the epic wars. Everything in it captivated 10-year-old me. One vacation, I stayed at this friend's house for three days, and we were just playing Age of Mythology until our brains fell out. 

That started me on the sure journey of being a strategy game nerd. I've been wololo-ed into the genre before I even started diving into the rabbit hole that is Age of Empires. But these were only the beginning. Later in life, I've discovered I can conquer galaxies in Stellaris, or complicate a family tree and make it a circle in Crusader Kings III. All that thanks to the OG strategy games that dragged me into this mess. Thanks, AoM and AoE. I remember you fondly with dank memes I found online.

  • Sometimes I see an Age of Mythology meme containing a word from it, like this Prostagma one, and I get nostalgic flashbacks to all the other snippets of language I remember from it. It feels equally nostalgic warmth just as much as it does like a brainfart of random mambo jambo.

    Do you remember “Izvoli!” or “Malista”? What about “Volume”, or simply “Ne”? My brain feels like it speaks in tongues when I remember that. Such a weird feeling. I love it.
